Usually found in deep colors ranging from shades of green to gray or black, most varieties of soapstone naturally darken with age. Applying mineral oil to the stone, however, speeds up this process, adding a patina while enhancing the beauty of its color and veining patterns. Soapstone is a unique stone often praised for its character as well as its density. It is impossible to stain, easy to maintain, and simple to repair, making it a very practical stone for use in your home.

Caring for Soapstone

What Makes Soapstone Special?

Soapstone is a natural material with a unique look and feel.

It is unlike granite, marble, limestone or quartzite in that it is completely non-porous.
There is no need to seal or treat the surface of soapstone because it is not affected by chemicals or food stains.
Soapstone has a naturally "honed" finish. Without a highly polished surface, fingerprints don't show.
Versatile soapstone lends itself to rustic, traditional, or contemporary styles, but it is also at home in modern or minimal settings. It is available in smooth or leathered finishes.

Establishing a Patina

Apply mineral oil to quicken the darkening process on your newly installed countertop. In order to keep this look, we recommend reapplying the oil every week or so, for the first several months. After the stone begins to establish a patina, apply oil as needed to maintain the desired color.

To apply the mineral oil, you will need only a paper towel or soft cloth. After oiling, any excess oil can be removed by wiping the treated surface with a wet cloth if desired. Please note, mineral oil doesn’t seal or protect the stone. It is only used to enhance the color and inherent natural veining characteristics and crystallization detail of the stone.

Cleaning

Clean daily with a mild dish soap. For a deep clean, any cleaning product can be used without harming the stone. Keep in mind, if cleaning with harsh chemicals, much of the mineral oil will be stripped from the stone and will need to be reapplied.

Restoration

Natural Stone Care for Marble, Quartzite, and Granite

Blot spills quickly, before they penetrate the surface.
Use a mild dish or hand soap, or a specially developed stone soap to clean.
Dry the surface with a soft cloth to avoid streaks.
Avoid exposure to oil, alcohol, vinegar, and citrus, as well as acidic chemicals or harsh cleansers.
Periodically seal, if necessary. If drops of water sprinkled on the stone surface no longer bead up, it is time to reseal. We recommend you begin watching for signs after a year, although some stone will not need resealed for many years.
