(Musings of a Stone Designer)

Wednesday, May 25 2011
As it gets close to the end of the academic year, many of us will be attending awards ceremonies of one type or another.  We will be celebrating achievements of every kind.  Like a mini-New Year's Eve reflection, May is a time to look back on what has been our brightest, and best.

We, at the Stone Studio, have compiled our own version of  "Senior Superlatives" ...ours, of course, are called "Studio Superlatives."

And the winners are:

  • Most Artistic:
    Great colors...                                                      shapes...
edges...                                                           patterns...this kitchen has it all!

  • Most square footage in a single kitchen:

This vacation home has 166 square feet of granite! (an average kitchen has about 60 or 70!)
  • Most changed:
    Before:                                                          After:
Yep, it really is the same kitchen.
Amazing what new stone counter tops can do! (...and tearing down a couple of walls)

  • Most functional backsplash:

Full-height, easy-to-clean stone behind range.  Well placed work light. (hidden by overhead cabinet) Cooking tools within reach. Accessible granite shelf for storing seasonings.

  • Best party spot:

Really great space for REALLY FUN parties.  As guests at the homeowners' annual Elvis party this year, we know this for a fact.
  • Most requested natural stone:

Light granite: Ouro Brasil                Dark granite: Verde Peacock                 Soapstone: Black Minas

  • Most popular sink style:

Apron Front Soapstone farm sink                                           Off-set, deep, double-bowl stainless steel

  • Best mix of materials:

Kashmir White granite, White Carrara marble, and Black Minas soapstone were all used as surface material in this kitchen. (The soapstone is not visible in these shots)
This homeowner also included tile and mirror for the backsplash!

  • Most beautiful laundry:
A tie--I just can't picture dirty socks and underware in these beautiful rooms.

  • Farthest distance from fabrication shop:
This family traveled over 150 miles to find us--but we're worth it!

  • Most likely to be featured in a magazine spread:

    Impossible to choose just one!

Natural Stone & the Green Movement  Countertop selection is often the first place people look to when opting to go green. Natural stone (especially Soapstone) is a top choice for the environmentally-friendly.
